Smart Brushes and Mobile Pens: How Modern Equipment is Transforming Farms

Modern livestock farming has evolved significantly over the past decade. Today, animal husbandry increasingly relies on innovations that enhance both animal welfare and farm efficiency. One of the latest trends in this field is the use of smart grooming devices and flexible, modular housing systems.

Patura, a leading European manufacturer of agricultural equipment, has been developing solutions for various animal categories – from calves and cows to horses. The latest generation of grooming brushes exemplifies how technology can simultaneously increase productivity and reduce stress in animals.

Brushes That Improve Mood and Milk Yield

Research indicates that when animals can groom themselves and maintain skin and coat hygiene, they feel more relaxed. For cows, this directly leads to improved circulation, greater mobility, and, most importantly, increased milk production.

New electronic brushes with motion sensors, such as the Patura Maxi and Mini models, activate when an animal approaches, rotating in both directions. They are designed to safely and effectively massage different body parts. Spring-loaded brushes, static brushes, and models with flexible mounts can be installed in all types of facilities – from large barns to smaller family farms.

“Our cows have been much calmer and more productive since we installed these brushes. They used to be quite restless, but now they groom and clean themselves whenever they want. Even the vet has noticed better skin and hoof conditions,” says Markus Ebner, a cattle farmer from the Tyrol region in Austria.

Modular Pens: On-Site Adaptability

Another significant trend in modern calf and young animal rearing is the use of modular pens, which adapt to the space and needs of farmers. Plastic side panels, simple locking systems, and large ventilation areas make these pens easy to maintain and safe for animals.

Pens can be easily combined into rows, each providing a minimum of 2.3 square meters of space, which is crucial for hygiene and proper development of young animals. Additionally, components can be replaced without tools, saving farmers time and effort.

“We can assemble, move, and clean them all in a single day. No more pushing and improvising. Plus, the calves no longer suffer from pneumonia as they used to. We have better ventilation and more light in the barn,” adds Simone Girard, a farmer from the Savoy Alps in France.

Horses Also Benefit from ‘Smart’ Solutions

For horses, bioclimatic shelters and mobile pens are gaining attention. These protect from wind, rain, and sun while ensuring constant access to food in secure conditions. Gates and fences are designed to prevent injuries and can easily adapt to each farm’s needs.

The HippoWire system, specifically designed for horse breeding, uses high-visibility and elastic wire that prevents injuries and is easy to install. This solution is becoming increasingly popular among breeders of sport and pedigree horses.

Animal Welfare: The Foundation of Successful Production

All these products and systems share a common focus: emphasis on animal welfare. Less stress means better productivity, fewer illnesses, and a more peaceful working environment for farmers. More farms are investing in such equipment today, bringing long-term savings in labor and healthcare costs.

An increasing number of farmers in France, Germany, and other European countries confirm that these investments pay off within the first year. Instead of relying on makeshift solutions, they choose equipment tailored to their needs – and the needs of their animals.
