Chartreuse and Génépi – Alpine Tradition in a Glass

The Alps are not only renowned for their majestic peaks and pristine nature but also for two unique beverages: chartreuse and génépi. These alcoholic drinks embody the spirit of the mountains, blending history with natural ingredients.

Chartreuse – The Monastic Secret

Chartreuse is an herbal liqueur originating from the French Alps, specifically from the Grande Chartreuse monastery near Grenoble. Its production dates back to 1605, when Carthusian monks received a secret recipe for an “elixir of long life.” The recipe contains a blend of 130 plants, the list of which remains a closely guarded secret.

The process begins with the harvesting of plants, which are dried and mixed in precise proportions. They are then macerated in alcohol and distilled. The liqueur is aged in large oak barrels in the monastery’s cellars, giving it a rich and complex aroma. Chartreuse comes in two main varieties: green chartreuse (strong, 55% alcohol) and yellow chartreuse (milder, 40% alcohol).

It pairs best with chocolate desserts or as a digestif after meals. Its complex aroma, with notes of herbs, cinnamon, and nutmeg, also makes it an excellent choice for cocktails.

Fun fact: Only the Carthusian monks know the complete recipe, and only three of them are involved in its production at any given time.

Génépi – The Essence of Alpine Herbs

Génépi is a traditional liqueur from the French and Italian Alps. It is made from a rare mountain herb, génépi artemisia, which grows at high altitudes, often above 2,000 meters. This plant is known for its intense fragrance and medicinal properties.

The production process begins with manual harvesting during the summer. The plants are then macerated in alcohol to extract their natural aromas. After maceration, the liqueur is aged for several months to achieve a balanced flavor. Génépi has a delicate yet refreshing taste, with notes of herbs and citrus.

Génépi is typically served as an aperitif or digestif. It pairs wonderfully with local cheeses and cured meats. It is traditionally enjoyed by mountaineers and locals after long days spent in the outdoors.

Fun fact: Génépi has inspired many songs and legends and was historically used as a remedy for various ailments, especially colds.
