Avian influenza remains a threat: 5 golden rules for backyard chicken keepers

Avian influenza continues to spread across Europe, posing a serious risk not only to large farms but also to small backyard flocks. Even if you only keep a few hens, you are legally obliged to follow certain biosecurity measures.

  4. Control access: visitors should wear shoe covers or use disinfectants.

  5. Prevent contact with wild birds: geese, ducks and cranes are main virus carriers.

If avian influenza is confirmed, all birds must be culled to stop the spread. Veterinary authorities may establish protection and surveillance zones.
