Avian influenza continues to spread across Europe, posing a serious risk not only to large farms but also to small backyard flocks. Even if you only keep a few hens, you are legally obliged to follow certain biosecurity measures.
5 golden rules:
-
Register your flock with the veterinary office and animal disease fund.
-
Monitor bird health: if at least three hens die within 24 hours, testing for avian influenza is mandatory.
-
Protect feed and water: cover feeders and drinkers to prevent access by wild birds.
-
Control access: visitors should wear shoe covers or use disinfectants.
-
Prevent contact with wild birds: geese, ducks and cranes are main virus carriers.
If avian influenza is confirmed, all birds must be culled to stop the spread. Veterinary authorities may establish protection and surveillance zones.
