South Tyrol’s Wines Shine with 345 Top Ratings

The South Tyrol wine region, known for its remarkable diversity, has once again proven its excellence. Recent reviews from 15 leading Italian wine guides and competitions have awarded an impressive 345 top ratings to 209 wines from 78 producers.

Celebrating Excellence in Winemaking

South Tyrolean wines received numerous accolades this year, with several notable highlights:

  • Gambero Rosso named the 2021 Sauvignon Riserva Gran Lafóa South Tyrol DOC by Schreckbichl as the Italian White Wine of the Year.
  • In the “Vini rari” category, Glögglhof’s 2022 St. Magdalener Classic Vigna Rondell R South Tyrol DOC also stood out.
  • Vitae awarded its prestigious “Tastevin” prize to the 2021 Blauburgunder Riserva Trattmann South Tyrol DOC by Girlan, which also earned the “Gemme” distinction alongside three other South Tyrolean wines.

Other standout wines included:

  • The 2021 Terlaner Primo Grande Cuvée South Tyrol DOC from the Terlan winery, was named the best white wine by I Vini di Veronelli.
  • Franz Haas’s 2022 Rosenmuskateller South Tyrol DOC, was honored as the Sweet Wine of the Year by Doctor Wine.

Additionally, Hans Terzer of St. Michael-Eppan received a lifetime achievement award, while the young St. Magdalener winemakers were recognized in the “Next Generation” category.

White Wines Lead, Reds Hold Their Ground

This year, 183 of the 345 top ratings went to white wines, confirming South Tyrol’s reputation as a white wine haven. Reds followed closely with 129 accolades, while 13 went to sweet wines and 20 to sparkling wines.

Pinot Noir emerged as the most awarded red variety, with 28 wines receiving top marks. Indigenous varieties like Vernatsch and Lagrein also made a strong showing, representing nearly 20% of all awarded wines. Among white wines, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and Chardonnay led the pack.

The Region’s Top Performers

Nine South Tyrolean wines earned five or more top ratings this year, with Terlan’s 2011 Pinot Blanc Rarity South Tyrol Terlaner DOC leading the way with six awards. Other standout wines included:

  • 2022 Lagrein Riserva Taber South Tyrol DOC (Bozen winery)
  • 2021 Pinot Noir Riserva Trattmann South Tyrol DOC (Girlan winery)
  • 2022 Gewürztraminer Nussbaumer South Tyrol DOC (Tramin winery)

Producers in the Spotlight

Terlan Winery secured the highest number of top marks (19), followed by Girlan, Schreckbichl, St. Michael-Eppan, and Tramin, each with 16. However, Schreckbichl led in the number of distinct award-winning wines, with eight.

This year’s results highlight the extraordinary quality and diversity of South Tyrolean wines, cementing their place among Italy’s finest.
