New discovery shows that the bee queen can preemptively activate her immune system thanks to signals from the hive.
Bees are more than just insects. They are a community organism — a complex social unit in which each individual has a role, but all breathe as one. This has long fascinated scientists. But a recent discovery by researchers from the “Zukunft Biene” project in Austria opens up an entirely new perspective.
Namely, the queen bee — the central figure of every bee society — can “self-protect” from diseases before even coming into contact with a pathogen.
How?
Through the worker bees that feed her. These bees, if exposed to sick hive members or pathogens, change the chemical composition of their cuticle — the protective layer of their bodies. These changes “signal” to the queen that something is wrong in the hive.

She then reacts. She activates her immune system, even though she has not yet been infected. This phenomenon has not been documented in any other animal species so far. Scientists call it a “socially mediated immune signal” — the queen receives information through touch and smell.
In laboratory conditions, these reactions have been confirmed multiple times. Queens were able to increase the production of immune cells and chemicals — before any actual exposure to bacteria. Moreover, this ability seems to improve colony survival under high-stress conditions.
“This discovery is revolutionary. It shows that bees possess a form of ‘collective immunity’ that operates not only at the community level but also within the queen’s body,” said Prof. Dr. Karl Crailsheim, lead researcher on the project in Graz.
Researchers believe this ability is part of an evolutionary mechanism that helped bees survive for millions of years. When disease appears in the hive, the queen doesn’t wait. She prepares. And the whole society grows stronger.
For beekeepers, this discovery could be significant. If worker bees send signals to the queen, it means hive health could be monitored much earlier than when symptoms appear. This opens the door to early diagnostics and even breeding programs focused on enhancing this trait.
In a time when bees struggle to survive winter, face stress, hunger, and pesticide exposure — this kind of “inner communication” may be the key to their future.
The queen bee is not only a symbol of power. She is also an antenna. A disease radar. A kind of immune sentinel at the heart of the hive.
