Modern agriculture is entering a new phase — one where sustainability, design, and technology define success. This was the main theme at expoSE and expoDirekt in Karlsruhe, where experts from across Europe showcased new solutions for the production and marketing of strawberries, asparagus, and other crops.
Sustainable and Aesthetic Packaging
The companies Lorentzen & Sievers and PRODINGER Verpackung presented innovative packaging materials that combine functionality and ecological responsibility. Their new recyclable materials extend product shelf life while offering an appealing design that attracts consumers at the point of sale.
Special focus was placed on packaging for strawberries and asparagus — products that require both protection and visual appeal. New cardboard and biofilm concepts not only preserve freshness but also reduce plastic use, marking a significant step toward lowering the environmental footprint of agriculture.
“Our design helps farmers promote their products while offering consumers an eco-friendly and attractive packaging solution,” said representatives from PRODINGER.
Research That Never Stops – Italian CIV as a Model of Innovation
At the same fair, great attention was drawn by Federico Stanzani, CEO of the Italian CIV (Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti), who presented the latest strawberry varieties adapted to climate change. His message was clear: “Our research never stops.”
CIV, best known for its apple and strawberry breeding, is now investing heavily in developing new, more resilient, and flavorful varieties. Among them stands out Klodia (CIVH725) — an early-ripening strawberry with a bright red color, sweet taste, and high tolerance to powdery mildew. Its long shelf life and resilience make it ideal for northern markets such as Germany and the UK.
“Climate change forces us to think ahead. New varieties must be resistant to diseases and adaptable to increasingly warmer summers. That’s the only way to ensure consistent yield and quality,” said Stanzani.
A Strawberry Conquering Europe
Since its launch in 2021, Klodia® has already established itself in commercial production across Germany, France, and Northern Europe. Its early harvest allows for a second fruiting, extending the season and boosting productivity. CIV is also developing varieties suited for organic farming, responding to the growing demand for healthy and sustainable food.
“Blueberries may be trendy, but strawberries remain the queens of fruit. Consumers want aromatic, beautiful, and long-lasting fruits — and that’s exactly what these new varieties deliver,” added Stanzani.
A Changing Market, Same Expectations
Germany, France, and the UK remain the key markets for European strawberry growers. Consumers increasingly value local and sustainable production while expecting innovation that ensures flavor and freshness throughout the season.
The combination of modern packaging solutions and resilient varieties like Klodia® shows that European agriculture is evolving toward an integrated model — where technology, design, and biology work together to create sustainability and quality on every table.
