When people think of Liechtenstein, they usually picture one of Europe’s smallest countries, the princely family, or its banking sector. Yet this Alpine principality has quietly become one of the region’s most attractive destinations for outdoor enthusiasts, offering spectacular hiking and cycling routes through pristine landscapes, historic villages, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
What makes Liechtenstein truly unique is the way it presents its natural attractions. Instead of a traditional guidebook, the country’s tourism organization has created an interactive adventure built around a fictional police chase. A Hiking Trail Across the Entire Country
The famous Liechtenstein Trail stretches for 75 kilometres and is divided into five daily stages, connecting all 11 municipalities of the country. Along the route, hikers pass medieval castles, vineyards, alpine meadows and panoramic viewpoints that reveal the beauty of this small but remarkably diverse destination.
Comfort is part of the experience. Hotels, restaurants and mountain inns are located along the trail, while a luggage transfer service allows visitors to hike from village to village without carrying heavy backpacks.
A Paradise for Cyclists
Liechtenstein is equally appealing to cycling enthusiasts. One of the country’s most scenic rides leads to Paula Hut (Paulahütte) on the slopes of Maurerberg.
The route winds through dense forests, climbing nearly 800 metres in elevation before reaching the mountain hut, once used by shepherds and farmers. Today it offers the perfect place to relax, enjoy a meal and take in the peaceful Alpine surroundings.
The Legendary Three Sisters
Experienced hikers should not miss the famous Three Sisters (Drei Schwestern) trail, widely regarded as one of Liechtenstein’s most spectacular mountain routes.
The path follows narrow ridges, ancient rock formations and stone staircases carved into the mountainside. From the highest sections, visitors enjoy sweeping views across Lake Constance, the Rhine Valley and the surrounding Alps.
Along the way stands Gafadura Hut, located at 1,428 metres above sea level. It is one of four mountain huts in Liechtenstein offering accommodation and meals, making it an excellent base for exploring the region.
A Small Country with Big Adventures
Although Liechtenstein is one of Europe’s smallest nations, it offers impressive mountain landscapes. No fewer than 29 peaks rise above 2,000 metres, making the country an outstanding destination for hiking, mountain biking and nature photography.
